After deleting the offending tweet, Palin replaced it with another calling on “peaceful New Yorkers” to “refute the Ground Zero mosque plan,” which only added to the confusion because it would appear the word she was looking for was “repudiate.” Then came the kicker: To quell the vicious Twitter-ribbing she was receiving, Palin unleashed yet another tweet comparing herself to no less than the Bard of Avon.

Naturally, this led to a very entertaining Twitter meme, #ShakesPalin, in which participants revamped classic Shakespeare quotes, Palin-style (and of which Reason’s The Cato Institute’s Julian Sanchez was arguably the champion).

Inception is so spectacularly entertaining you’ll want to see it twice, and so mind-bendingly original you’ll need to see it more than once to get all the intricacies of the story. Writer/director Christopher Nolan cements his place as one of our top living filmmakers with this trippy sci-fi action thriller/romance that more than lives up to its hype.

Inception’s one of those movies you absolutely must engage your brain to understand and enjoy. Get your popcorn and sodas before the first frame or go without – you don’t want to miss a minute for fear of losing track of the story. But Inception not only demands your attention it earns it by never letting the effects overwhelm the characters, never settling for an easy out or taking storytelling shortcuts, and by keeping the pace brisk and the action stunningly inventive.

A refreshing reprieve from a summer full of disappointments, Inception is that rare beast that lingers with you long after you’ve left the theater. What Nolan’s accomplished with Inception is, to put it simply, brilliant.

Inception – The Story

Inception is all about a new form of corporate espionage: the ability to steal ideas while the owner’s dreaming. This is done by means of an ‘extraction’ team. Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) heads up the most successful such team, with Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as the point man who helps set up the scheme. They’ll be joined for their riskiest mission by Ariadne as the architect (Ellen Page) who creates the perfect dreamscape, and Eames (Tom Hardy) as a forger/master of disguise. Yusuf (Dileep Rao) is in charge of administering the drugs used to keep the team and its target in the dream state and who ultimately makes sure they all exit the dream safely.

When we first are introduced to Cobb, a conflicted man who cannot return to his family in the States for a reason that’s left unexplained for much of the film, he’s in the middle of trying to extract a secret from a powerful businessman named Saito (Ken Watanabe). The mission doesn’t go as planned, but it does lead to a job offer Cobb can’t refuse. In exchange for planting an idea in someone’s head, Saito offers Cobb the opportunity to return to the US to be reunited with his family. That offer’s impossible for Cobb to resist as he desperately misses his two small children, although planting an idea means the team will be entering uncharted territory.

The target of the job is Robert Fischer Jr (Cillian Murphy), the heir to a multibillion-dollar corporation. Saito wants Fischer to break up his father’s company so the team must plant that seed in Fischer’s subconscious. How they go about tackling this mission, how they handle the complexities involved in journeying through a stranger’s mind, and the emotional turmoil Cobb experiences as he spends extended periods of time in the dream state with – no spoilers here – someone whose presence both disturbs and thrills him, makes for an incredibly tense thrill ride of a film you have to experience to understand.

The Acting
Leonardo DiCaprio is having a terrific year with both Shutter Island and Inception clear examples of why he’s one of the most sought-after and respected actors of his generation. DiCaprio doesn’t go big when small will do, and that can also be said of the rest of the cast.

Ellen Page may be diminutive in stature but as Ariadne, the sole female member of the extraction team, she’s a fearsome presence. And as the chemist who handles the dream-inducing drugs, Dileep Rao (Avatar) is responsible for the film’s lighter moments, of which there are very few, and he handles the task of providing comic relief well. Marion Cotillard (Nine) isn’t part of the team (and I’ve deliberately left mentions of her character out so as not to spoil the film) but she does play a key role in Inception. Cotillard gets better with each project, and she’s simply breathtaking and heartbreaking as a pivotal player in Nolan’s twisted drama.
Particularly impressive is Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer) as Cobb’s right-hand man. Gordon-Levitt did 99% of his own stunts which is an impressive feat in this film, but he’s equally as adept at handling the film’s quieter moments. And Nolan has also brought back a few of his past collaborators – Michael Caine (as DiCaprio’s dad), Ken Watanabe, and Cillian Murphy – to fill key roles. It seems Nolan can’t do a movie now without Caine, which is good news for all of us Caine fans. Cillian Murphy, The Scarecrow in Nolan’s Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, makes the character of an heir to billions into a sympathetic figure, playing him as someone who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth but who doesn’t adopt the airs of a filthy rich man who thinks he’s entitled. This sort of character has been done to death in films so to see how Nolan and Murphy have chosen to humanize the character is refreshing.

Ken Watanabe is a terrific actor but I have to say that if there’s anything about Inception that I was a little disappointed in it was the occasional scene in which Watanabe was a little difficult to understand because of his heavy accent. It’s a minor annoyance and it only flared up a few times. And last but not least, Tom Hardy’s a real scene-stealer as a forger who can kick ass and steal identities.

The Bottom Line
Inception makes a clear case for why the Academy Awards should honor ensemble efforts. Every member of Nolan’s team pulls his/her weight in Inception and, as complex as this story is, one bad apple could have spoiled the entire film. The story revolves around Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, however every one of the key roles is fully fleshed out, every actor is pitch perfect. Normally in a production of this size there’s a character or two you sort of forget are even in the film after you’ve left the theater. That’s not likely to happen with any of the characters in Inception.

Nolan opted to go with as little CG as possible and to involve his actors in as many stunts as they could safely handled. That adds a level of realism to the film with the characters seeming to be in real peril. From the gorgeous sequence featured in the trailer with Ellen Page and Leonardo DiCaprio sitting at a table outside a Paris cafe while all around them storefronts burst into the air to a white-knuckle crash scene with a van filled with the team out of control and rolling down a hill to a high speed shoot ‘em up sequence in the Alps to our heroes underwater in distress, Nolan’s decision to do as much in camera as possible is shown over and over again to have been absolutely the right choice. There’s an extra weight and grittiness to each of the action scenes that wouldn’t have been there if they were CG creations.

Cinematographer Wally Pfister and editor Lee Smith may have had the most difficult jobs on Inception, but the results of their hard work is award-worthy. The film deals with waking reality and multiple levels of dreaming, and Pfister and Smith helped pull off Nolan’s vision without making a single misstep.

Inception isn’t so much just a movie to sit through in an air-conditioned theater as it is a genuine cinematic experience. It’s actually a little draining both mentally and physically, but not in a negative way. You become so immersed in this world Nolan’s created that sitting through Inception takes a little time to recuperate from, and you’ll be replaying scenes in your head for days trying to answer a few lingering questions. Worth every penny spent in the making, and worth every dollar forked over for a ticket, Inception may just be the best movie of 2010. As of mid-July, it’s at the top of my list for all of 2010’s releases thus far.

The quake struck at 5 AM, and was not felt by all that many people. The US Geological Survey revealed that the magnitude of the quake was measured at 3.6, which makes it a fairly minor quake. It is stronger than any other quake that has hit the region in the past 35 years, though.

“I looked out the window and wondered if it was a plane or something, then I checked my BlackBerry and saw a dozen e-mails alerting the small quake,” said Steve.

It was the first earthquake with a magnitude higher than three near Washington since 1974. In California, Earthquakes of that size are very common and may even happen multiple times in one weak. About an hour after the earth quake, 5,500 people had reported that they felt it. Individuals who felt the quake were in Washington, West Virginia, Virginia and Delaware.

“It was really loud, like a plane flying really low. I had never felt anything like it. I was jolted out of bed. All my neighbors woke up. After it passed, I thought it could be an earthquake, and lay in bed hoping there were no aftershocks,” said Anne Ngunijiri, 30.

According to Animal Control Officer Frank Hackett, the found creature was real ugly and horrible. It cannot be considered among the normal animals. It was also reported that another Chupacabra was set to death earlier in the week in Hood County.

The found animals that are suspected to be a Chupacabras will undergo DNA testing to conclude what they really are.

Its plan is simple: Deliver the online video, features, and websites that we enjoy on our desktop screens and deliver it all to our TV screens. But history shows that connecting those two ecosystems – or at least convincing shoppers that they need such a union – is a lot harder than it sounds.

AOLTV fell flat. Microsoft Windows media players couldn’t simplify the experience enough to win over many converts. Apple TV felt too tethered to your computer’s iTunes account. Tivo Premier, the Kodak Theater HD Player, and Yahoo’s living room integrationdo basically the same thing as Google TV, but never gained much traction.

Should we think that Google TV’s fate will be any different?

A lot of signs point to “yes.”

First, let’s talk hardware. Google has teamed up with Sony to bake Google TV into television setsand Blu-ray players. Also, Logitech and Dish Network will each roll out set-top boxes. This sounds much like past efforts. But then Best Buy promised to heavily market Google TV (in its many forms) in stores nationwide. Good start.

Second, Google seems willing to play well with others. The company’s announcement gave visual or explicit nods to Microsoft, Netflix, Adobe Flash, the NBA, Pandora, Amazon, and Hulu.

That last name is huge for two reasons. Streaming Hulu on your TV is the next best thing to a DVR – possibly better since you can watch old programs that you didn’t think to record. But perhaps more important is that Hulu has previously shut down services that delivered its videos on a TV. The Sony PS3 once allowed you to watch Hulu shows; then the Web company killed the feature. If Hulu is part of Google TV, as today’s keynote suggested, it shows that Google is ready to cut interesting deals and pull in reluctant companies. That bodes well for the service as a whole.

This corporate magnetism brings us to the third hopeful sign: People love Google. There’s no metric to define this, but Americans want Google to amaze them and trust that it can. Millions of people have embraced Google Search, Google Maps, Google Voice, YouTube, Blogger, Google Doodles, Google News, Google text-message searches, Android phones. What’s next? Maybe Google TV.

Two of those officials said that Landis’s messages provided a detailed description of doping that began in 2002, Landis’s first year alongside then-teammate Lance Armstrong. Both were riding for the successful but now-defunct United States Postal Service team. The two officials who received the e-mail did not want their names published, citing ongoing investigations, including by federal authorities, into the content of the e-mail.

In the messages, which were first reported by The Wall Street Journal, Landis accused other top American cyclists on the Postal Service team, including Armstrong, of using performance-enhancing drugs and methods. Other cyclists named were current United States road racing national champion George Hincapie, three-time Tour of California champion Levi Leipheimer and five-time United States time trial champion David Zabriskie.

None of those riders, who are all competing at this week’s Tour of California, were available for comment Wednesday.

Jonathan Vaughters, team manager of Zabriskie’s Garmin-Transitions team, said that Zabriskie was upset after learning of Landis’s accusations late Wednesday.

“I don’t know what is in the head of Floyd Landis, what his motivations are, but I think Dave just wants to get on with this race,” Vaughters said of Zabriskie, who is in the overall lead of the Tour of California, with four stages to go. “Dave can win this race. He can win this race clean, under any level of scrutiny.”
Steve Johnson, chief executive of USA Cycling and the main recipient of Landis’s e-mail messages, did not return several calls for this article on Wednesday. Landis also did not return phone calls, but told ESPN.com that he had no documentation to prove most of his claims against his former teammates.

“I want to clear my conscience,” said Landis, who races with the lower level OUCH-Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling team. “I don’t want to be part of the problem anymore.”

Landis provided detailed information about his own doping practices, saying he consistently used the blood-booster EPO to increase his endurance, testosterone, human growth hormone and blood transfusions.

He said he took female hormones and tried insulin once during the years he rode for the Postal Service and Swiss-based Phonak teams, according to ESPN.com. He spent $90,000 a year on his doping regimen, he said.
Landis said that some of his teammates on the Postal Service team were well aware of the doping regimen in the sport. In at least one of his messages to cycling officials, according to a person who received it, Landis said that he and Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France champion, had discussed the need to use blood transfusions to boost endurance. A new test for the synthetic blood-booster, EPO, had made doping more difficult.

Armstrong, who has been dogged by doping allegations throughout his career, has denied doping and has never officially tested positive. At the 1999 Tour, he failed a test for a corticosteroid, but produced a doctor’s note for it.

For Pat McQuaid, president of the International Cycling Union, Landis’s accusations do not taint Armstrong’s reputation one bit.

“I think Landis is in a very sad situation and I feel sorry for the guy because I don’t accept anything he says as true,” McQuaid said in a telephone interview on Thursday. “This is a guy who has been condemned in court, who has stood up in court and stated that the he never saw any doping in cycling. He’s written a book saying he won the Tour de France clean. Where does that leave his credibility? He has an agenda and is obviously out to seek revenge.”

McQuaid said he received Landis’s e-mail messages several weeks ago, but immediately discounted the accusations in them because they were “purely allegations and no proof of anything.” He has since sent the messages to the cycling union’s legal department.

Federal authorities have spoken with Landis in recent weeks about the information in the e-mail, according to two people briefed on the matter.

Landis, who spent nearly two years and reportedly more than $2 million fighting the charges against him, has agreed to cooperate with the authorities and provide them with the same information he has provided anti-doping and cycling officials. The authorities are interested in whatever information Landis has about distributors of banned substances and new methods of doping being used by athletes.

Over the past month, Landis also has been cooperating with officials from the United States Anti-Doping Agency, providing them with details about the other cyclists and Armstrong, the people briefed on the matter said.

Jeff Novitzky, federal agent who spearheaded the investigation into the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative steroids case, is involved in the investigation. It is not clear whether Landis has contacted him via e-mail or telephone.

The Gipsy Kings entertained with a song from “Toy Story 3,” which was danced to by Tony and Cheryl, who actually choreographed this number for the movie. They were joined on the floor by Dimitri and Kim.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ blogger Pat MurphyDance Center Comedy then analyzed the final 5 celebrities competing for the semi-finals. This was, at best, semi-amusing.

Other entertainment of the night included performances from the first-ever College Dance Championship and more work from The Gipsy Kings.

The important announcements began, and the first couple saved was Nicole and Derek. The first couple in the bottom two was Chad and Cheryl.

Next up were more dire announcements: Evan and Anna and Erin and Maksim were safe, but Niecy and Louis werem’t.

The moment of truth finally arrived with Niecy being informed that she was going to have to pack up her jiggleable parts and take them home. She was fun but now she’s done.

Next week is semi-final time. It should be high drama and even higher expectations.
